Job Description
This Learning Assistant role provides an opportunity to work at Cornish College, as part of a focused and enthusiastic Inclusive Education team providing effective support for secondary students with additional needs.
Learning Assistants may be required to work across the primary and secondary years, in accordance with the needs of our students.
Position Description
- Position Allocation: 8.30am to 3.35pm, term time only. This position could be part or full-time, depending on the applicants.
- Primary Focus This role of Learning Assistant is part of the College’s focused and enthusiastic Inclusive Education team, providing support for secondary students with additional needs. Learning Assistants may be required to work across the primary and secondary years, in accordance with the needs of our students.
- Commencement: 2026
- Reports to: Inclusive Education Team Leader Deputy Principal – Head of Learning
The Position
The role of Learning Assistant at Cornish College is to provide effective support for students with additional needs.
Duties
- Under the supervision and direction of the classroom teacher, and/or the Inclusive Education Teacher(s), the Learning Assistant will demonstrate a collaborative work ethic. They will assist students in class work using established principles, practices and procedures.
- To implement approaches to literacy or numeracy with guidance from Inclusive Education Teacher(s), if required.
- To attend appropriate Professional Learning for further development and to build knowledge and skills.
- To document and maintain records of work on student progress on a daily basis or as requested by the Inclusive Education Teacher(s).
- When instructed by the Inclusive Education Teacher(s), engage in communication with parents.
- To attend regular staff meetings as scheduled/required.
- The Learning Assistant role may include note taking in meetings and reporting on student application.
- To contribute to the development, implementation and review of Individual Learning Plans of nominated students when required.
The Person
Learning Assistants need to:
- Have an interest and experience working with primary and secondary-aged children
- Be energetic and enjoy working as part of a small team and enjoy dealing with children
- Be efficient and well-organised
- Demonstrate initiative
- Have the flexibility to deal with the unexpected
- Be warm and friendly and have excellent interpersonal skills
- Maintain confidentiality
- Dress and conduct themselves in a professional manner, at all times
- Have a positive outlook on life and demonstrate a positive mindset
Qualifications
Applicants should have appropriate qualifications and experience in assisting students with learning difficulties.
Current First Aid Certificate or a willingness to undertake an appropriate First Aid course.
All general support staff at Cornish College must hold a current Working with Children’s Check for Employment purposes and, at the time of employment, are required to provide a current Police Check.
