Position Descriptor: We are seeking a dedicated and passionate educator to join our Tailored Learning team at Adelaide Botanic High School (ABHS), South Australia. This position is suited to teachers who have a strong desire to support a diverse range of students and families, particularly those facing significant barriers to mainstream learning, including:

  • Persistent days of absence
  • Complex family dynamics
  • Mental health challenges
  • Homelessness
  • Juvenile justice involvement
  • Experiences with addiction
  • Young parenting or caregiving
  • Children in care
  • Lack of engagement or increasing disconnection from school
  • Behaviours of concern that may impact their own and others' safety

What you will do/essential qualities:

  • Prioritisation of relationships: build meaningful relationships with students as the foundation for trust and engagement in learning.
  • Curriculum knowledge: ability to teach middle school Literacy, Numeracy and create connections between hands-on experiential learning activities (such as The Arts, Food Tech, HPE, Design & Tech).
  • Trauma-informed practice: approach all interactions and teaching with trauma-informed practices at the forefront, ensuring students feel safe and supported.
  • Strong collaboration skills: collaborate effectively with the Tailored Learning leader, SSOs, and Youth Workers to design and deliver meaningful learning experiences.
  • Differentiation expertise: demonstrate the ability to differentiate curriculum between multiple year levels, ensuring that all students? needs are addressed.
  • Curriculum synergy:
    • Create connections between hands-on experiential learning activities and the development of core skills in literacy and numeracy across varied learning areas.
    • Co-design learning experiences with students, ensuring their interests and strengths guide their educational journey.
    • Work alongside students to support them in achieving personalised learning outcomes.
  • Commitment to continuity: demonstrate a desire to work within the Tailored Learning team over several years to provide consistency and stability for Tailored Learning students.

What specific trauma-informed strategies do you use to ensure all students feel secure and ready to engage in learning?
  2. Explain how you differentiate curriculum and learning experiences across multiple year levels, particularly for disengaged students or those with complex backgrounds. Provide a practical example where you integrated hands-on or experiential activities (such as The Arts, Food Tech, or HPE) to enhance literacy and numeracy outcomes, and describe how you involved students in co-designing their learning.
  3. Describe an experience where you supported a student facing significant barriers to learning (e.g., trauma, mental health challenges, disconnection from school). How did you build a relationship with this student, and what strategies did you use to foster engagement and trust?
