The School

Perth Modern School, a proud government school, is Western Australia's only fully selective school for academically gifted students in Years 7 to 12. The school honours rich traditions, empowers those present and shapes the future for gifted and talented learners and leaders.

At Perth Modern School, leaders emphasise the importance of connection and relationships in the process of listening, thinking and learning together. We partner with students, families, and alumni, to successfully navigate change and improve student outcomes; a community where everyone belongs. In the early years, this means ensuring every student is known and understood, their needs and unique potential nurtured. As students progress, they are supported as self-motivated learners and leaders who are; courageous, curious, compassionate, committed and collaborative, encouraged to pursue their dreams, and resourced to achieve both academic excellence and positive wellbeing.

Thanks to the use of innovative technology, students living in regional Western Australia can access the Gifted and Talented Online Program without relocating to Perth. The program can be accessed at any regional public secondary school outside of the Bunbury or Albany region. The program for Years 7 to 10 students is delivered from Perth Modern School. Entrance to the program is only available by examination administered by the Gifted and Talented Selection Unit at the WA Department of Education.

An initiative of the Department of Education, programs of study are offered in Mathematics, Science, English and Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS). Students usually enter either the mathematics and science stream or the humanities stream (English and HASS). A number of students choose to pursue studies in both streams, when offered the opportunity mid Year 7 or at the commencement of Year 8. Children study with other gifted students and follow a differentiated curriculum designed specifically for their needs. The GT Online curriculum is differentiated to cater for the needs of gifted students using three broad approaches: acceleration, extension, and enrichment.

The Role

The Gifted and Talented Online (GATE) Program is seeking dynamic, motivated, and culturally responsive teachers who exhibit innovation and creativity in classroom practices and hold a strong understanding of the English curriculum for students in Years 7 to 10.

As a teacher with the GATE online program, based at Perth Modern School, you will have the opportunity to reach out and make a difference to students throughout Western Australia, delivering high-quality online and blended education programs to suit the varying contexts and needs of our students. You will be fully supported to develop your skills in online teaching, enabling you to create engaging and culturally responsive opportunities to inspire students and cater for student diversity. Professional, enthusiastic, merit selected staff provide a broad range of learning experiences, including overnight camps, tailored to the skills and strengths of high ability and gifted learners that enhance student’s potential and love of learning. Our teachers' deep subject knowledge and passion for their profession ensure that students are always challenged and engaged.

Suitable applicants will ideally be skilled in the use of diagnostic and student performance data to inform teaching and learning programs, have excellent interpersonal skills and be committed to working as part of a dynamic and collaborative team. Having a positive attitude with the ability to anticipate and adapt to change, and showing initiative, flexibility, and creative problem solving to produce the best opportunities for students will be highly regarded.

Applicants should have an understanding of the needs of gifted and talented teaching and learning and will undertake the learning management requirements for remote and rural access to identified students who are enrolled in the Gifted and Talented Selective Program.
