The HODC leads curriculum implementation and whole school programs, ensuring alignment with school and departmental initiatives and maintaining a strong focus on equitable, high quality learning for all students.

The role requires active participation in leadership, professional learning, and strategic planning to support ongoing improvement.

They build teacher capability through developing pedagogy, supporting high performance, and modelling socially just practices.

The role focuses on enabling every student to access appropriate curriculum and differentiated instruction while strengthening collaborative planning, moderation, and shared teacher efficacy to improve whole school outcomes.

Key priorities include:

  • Leading the improvement of teaching practices across the school through modelling, coaching and structured capability development, and ensuring consistent, high quality implementation of the Australian Curriculum and assessment frameworks.
  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
  • Form partnerships with students, parents, other government agencies, and community groups.

The Perfect Fit:

To perform effectively, the HODC must demonstrate strong instructional expertise, including deep curriculum knowledge and the ability to lead high quality teaching and learning.

  • Articulating a shared educational vision, setting high expectations, implementing equitable practices, and collaborating confidently with stakeholders.
  • Understanding departmental policies and maintaining professional conduct are fundamental to meeting the role's responsibilities.
  • Highly beneficial capabilities include experience in coaching teachers through observation and feedback, leading collaborative planning, supporting assessment design and moderation, and using data to drive improvement.
  • Flexibility to adapt to local contexts, respond to teacher capability needs, and differentiate support.
