As part of the Queensland Government's $100 million commitment for a Student Wellbeing Package, we are calling qualified Social workers and Psychologists to join us and be part of this game-changing initiative on Palm Island in tropical North Queensland. You will have demonstrated understanding of historical and contemporary issues affecting First Nations people.

About the School Community

Bwgcolman Community School is located on tropical Palm Island in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Our motto '2 Way Strong' reflects the importance of our students being able to participate in the global community while remaining strong in Palm Island culture and maintaining their identity.

Bwgcolman Community School currently has 320 students spread across 14 classes. As a National Partnership school we have a heavy focus on literacy and numeracy development. We also implement the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program. The school works in partnership with universities like QUT and ACU to implement numeracy programs. Respect, responsibility and safety are at the forefront of everything we do.

About the role

The purpose of this role is to deliver high quality support services to students with mild to moderate mental health concerns. As a specialist member of a multi-disciplinary school based team, you will connect with students, staff, parents, carers and the broader community. You will provide 1:1 brief short term therapeutic interventions, clinical case work and targeted group work to support early intervention within a wellbeing framework.

Your responsibilities include

  • Providing child-centred therapeutic interventions to individuals and families
  • Work collaboratively and innovatively within the school system and support teams to ensure systemic and person centred practice is implemented
  • Provide culturally safe and aware interventions
  • Develop and implement strategies to provide information, support and encourage awareness of school activities and programs
  • Monitor, evaluate and review the implementation of programs

Essential requirements

  • Demonstrated competency and experience working with First Nations People.
  • Current registration with AHPRA or Eligible for AASW membership.
  • When working in regulated employment an employee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services
