Role Description/Criteria
In a Victorian Catholic primary school, a classroom teacher is responsible for delivering high-impact instruction grounded in the Science of Learning, ensuring that pedagogical practices align with how students best process and retain information. This involves the consistent use of explicit teaching models—such as "I Do, We Do, You Do"—to provide clear scaffolding and reduce cognitive load for all learners. Teachers are required to maintain academic rigor by implementing scheduled assessments as mandated by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), using this data to track progress and differentiate instruction effectively.
Beyond academics, the role carries a profound responsibility for Child Safety, requiring the strict maintenance of professional boundaries and the active fulfillment of all legislative requirements under Ministerial Order 1359. Furthermore, as an integral member of a faith community, the teacher must be accredited to teach in a Catholic School (or be actively working towards this accreditation), demonstrating a commitment to the school’s religious mission and the holistic development of every child.
Teachers in Victorian Catholic primary schools must hold current registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and meet specific Catholic employer requirements.
VIT Registration Requirements
- Qualifications: At least four years of tertiary study, including an approved Initial Teacher Education (ITE) degree.
- Suitability Checks: A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) conducted by VIT.
- LANTITE: Successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (for graduates from 2016 onwards).
- Child Safety: Commitment to Child Safe Standards and Ministerial Order 1359.
