Job Description

About the Role

The Friends’ School is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Science and Mathematics to join our Middle School team (Years 7–8) on a full-time, fixed-term basis.

This role will work proactively, collaboratively, and responsively to support the Middle School’s connected and cross-disciplinary learning program. The successful applicant will deliver high-quality Science and Mathematics teaching, contribute to innovative and inclusive programs, and support the academic, social, and personal development of students in line with the School’s Purpose and Concerns and Quaker ethos.

The Teacher of Science and Mathematics will also participate in pastoral care, co-curricular programs, and school-wide initiatives, fostering strong relationships with students, colleagues, and families.

The position commences in Semester 2, 2026, with the possibility of an earlier start to ensure a smooth transition. The role concludes at the end of the academic year, on Staff Day, 11 December 2026.

Key Focus Areas

  • Deliver engaging, inclusive, and evidence-based Science and Mathematics programs for Years 7–8.
  • Apply contemporary pedagogy and assessment practices aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
  • Support the Middle School’s cross-disciplinary learning programs and collaborative teaching initiatives.
  • Champion child safeguarding, mandatory reporting, and a strong child-safe culture.
  • Foster positive, respectful relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Participate in pastoral care as a Key Teacher and contribute to student wellbeing.
  • Engage in planning, evaluating, and developing curriculum programs to meet diverse student needs.
  • Contribute to co-curricular programs, meetings, assemblies, and other school activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, reporting, and administrative responsibilities.

Essential Qualifications

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in Science, Mathematics, or Education.
  • Current Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board registration (or eligibility to register).
  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Employment category).
  • Knowledge of the Australian Curriculum (Years 7–12) and experience in secondary or upper secondary teaching.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver innovative and engaging Science and Mathematics programs.
  • Experience in cross-disciplinary teaching and collaborative curriculum design.
  • Commitment to student pastoral care and wellbeing.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional learning and ongoing pedagogical development.
  • Active support for the Purpose and Concerns, Learning Principles, and ethos of The Friends’ School.
  • Experience in co-curricular program delivery and school community engagement.
