About the role

As the Principal Consultant, Health and Safety Project, you will provide statewide strategic and professional practice leadership to support Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator roles based in schools across Queensland.


This includes training, coaching and professional guidance to strengthen health and safety, injury management and wellbeing practices in school environments.

You will lead and support the continuous improvement of the department's Health, Safety and Wellbeing Management System to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and contemporary best practice. This role does not have a direct reporting or line management relationship with Workplace Health and Safety Coordinators.

This role is centrally based.

Your opportunity

As the Principal Health and Safety Project Consultant, you will:

  • Provide high level governance and strategic advice to senior managers and employees to support the continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing in the Department.
  • Lead the development and implementation of initiatives, which represent best practice and maximise cost effectiveness to support the delivery of regional services including governance, resource management and communications.

About your vacancy

Responsibilities include:

  • Research, analyse and evaluate complex issues related to operational issues and projects.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients, networks, stakeholders and service providers to achieve organisational goals and project outcomes.
  • Critically evaluate and interpret data, policies and processes that are likely to impact on the department's activities, including proposing options and solutions.
  • Prepare and coordinate the development of correspondence, presentations, briefs, submissions, project plans, and reports on initiatives, strategies and policies.
  • Provide high level impartial advice and consultancy services to clients and stakeholders on a broad range of health, safety, wellbeing and injury management, topics, systems and practices.
  • Lead and oversee the development, implementation, maintenance and review of programs, systems, policies and procedures by effectively using individual and team capabilities to delegate tasks effectively and negotiate the responsibility of work outcomes.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the planning and delivery of stakeholder engagement meetings and training related to projects and initiatives.

What we are looking for

Whilst there are no mandatory qualifications required for this position, it would be highly desirable for the successful applicant to possess:

  • Certificate IV, Diploma or higher in Workplace Health and Safety and have previous experience in Rehabilitation and Return to Work.

It is a mandatory condition of this role that you:

  • Possess a current Working with Children Check clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services. (In accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 a person is prohibited from working in regulated child-related employment unless the person holds a current Working with Children Check clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services).
  • Possess a current drivers' licence
  • Are required to travel and overnight absences from base may be required.
