We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Roebourne District High School (DHS) is situated in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The distance from Perth to Roebourne is 1,251 km and is a short 39.7km from Karratha to Roebourne. The community is rich in Aboriginal culture sitting on Ngarluma Country with a strong focus on relationships with family, elders and community members. The school caters from Kindergarten to Year 12 with cultural responsiveness and high expectations for every student.

The Role

We are looking for applicants who can ideally work flexibly across all year levels from Kindergarten to Year 12, supporting students with a diverse range of needs. Tasks may involve providing one-on-one support, assisting in small group activities, or contributing to whole class learning under teacher direction. We highly value applicants with adaptability, as you may be working with different age groups, developmental stages, and learning programs throughout the school week.

As a Special Needs Education Assistant at Roebourne DHS, you have the opportunity to:

  • Support student learning, development and engagement under teacher direction.
  • Assist students with self-care, mobility, and communication needs where required.
  • Implement strategies to support social, emotional, and behavioural regulation.
  • Contribute to the preparation and organisation of resources and materials.
  • Monitor and report on student progress to teaching staff.
  • Foster positive, respectful, and inclusive relationships with students, staff and families.

Suitable applicants will ideally have:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting students with complex needs.
  • Experience or training in working with students with disabilities or additional learning needs (desirable but not essential).
  • Capacity to follow teacher direction and implement individualised learning and behaviour strategies.
  • Commitment to student safety, wellbeing, and inclusion.

  • A CV of up to two (2) pages outlining your employment history and professional learning summary relevant to this position
  • A two (2) page statement addressing the following selection criteria as outlined in the attached JDF
    1. Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
    2. Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
    3. Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
    4. Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
    5. Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
    6. Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
