The School
Engaging respectfully in a cross-cultural setting on the Cocos Islands is vital for joining the teaching team. Prospective teachers at Cocos (Keeling) Island District High School (DHS) must be resilient and resourceful, ready to work in one of the state's most remote schools. It is vital to prioritise fostering positive relationships that enhance the school's overall well-being over individual preferences. Moreover, creativity and resourcefulness are essential in both educational and personal life for success on the Cocos Islands.
At Cocos (Keeling) Islands DHS, we are committed to our vision of “high levels of learning for all students”. We provide a high-quality education in a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. As part of a close-knit community, our school offers a unique setting where children develop academically, socially, and emotionally from Kindergarten to Year 10. We ensure a seamless transition between early childhood, primary, and secondary schooling by applying our whole-school instructional model to all learning activities. Our school motto, ‘Kerjasama & Kejayaan’ (Cooperation & Achievement), reflects our belief that the school and community work together as a cohesive unit to deliver impactful outcomes for our students. These partnerships between students, teachers and the community are a vital part of our school culture.

The Role
Suitable applicants will ideally possess proficiency in current and effective teaching practices that support the school’s strategic goals and directions. Suitable applicants should have a strong capacity to plan challenging and engaging programs, utilising a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum. Knowledge of Explicit Instruction, High-Impact Teaching Strategies, and Synthetic Phonics programs such as Sounds-Write or MultiLit, along with the Talk for Writing program, will be highly desirable. Suitable applicants should ideally have a good understanding of teaching students from an English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) background and be familiar with the EAL/D progress maps. We are seeking applicants who display data-informed practices, enabling them to differentiate instruction effectively and achieve high levels of achievement and progress for all students.
Teachers in our Early Childhood Education (ECE) phase of learning should promote the principles outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standards. They should recognise that children need opportunities to interact and develop trusting relationships. Programs should include planned, purposeful play, balanced with explicit teaching of essential foundational skills and concepts.
The Cocos Islands DHS operates as a K to 10 school, divided over two campuses: West Island and Home Island. Teachers in our Primary School team are expected to be committed, flexible, and adaptable, as they may work across either campus or in various class settings. Our primary classrooms currently include MAG Classes that cater to multiple year groups, such as Years K to 2 and 3 to 6, which predominantly consist of students from Anglo-Australian backgrounds (West Island), alongside split classes and single-stream classes primarily made up of students with EALD (Cocos-Malay) backgrounds (Home Island). Most classes feature students with special needs, language difficulties, or learning challenges. Our school is well-resourced, ensuring that class sizes remain small and additional support is available to classes. Diversity is celebrated, and equity is pursued to support all students.
Suitable applicants are encouraged to learn more about our school, the context in which you will work on the Cocos Islands, the benefits, challenges, and considerations of working on the Cocos Islands by reading the attached Additional Information Sheet and CIDHS Strategic Plan.
