Location Profile

Glenallen School, located at 7 Allen Street, Glen Waverley, provides individual learning programs for students aged between 4.8 and 18 years, who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment requiring paramedical support. The school caters for students with a wide range of intellectual abilities. Current students have complex needs and often multiple disabilities.

Transdisciplinary teams including teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists work together to plan, implement and evaluate individual student focused learning programs. Other support staff includes nurses, community wellbeing officer, program assistants and personal care assistants.

Our aim is to provide for the development of each student intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally. Individual educational and therapeutic programs are designed to promote student achievement as well as maximising independence in functional activities of daily living. Each student is encouraged to be an active participant in their individual learning program.

Selection Criteria

• KSC1 - Possess a recognised qualification in Occupational Therapy.
• KSC2 - Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the implementation of active Occupational Therapy programs for students with physical disabilities and/or health impairments.
• KSC3 - The ability to work as a member of a transdisciplinary team.
• KSC4 - Provide evidence for a commitment to personal professional development.
• KSC5 - Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Role

This role requires a recognised tertiary qualification, with eligibility for registration with AHPRA.

This role has professional support and guidance close at hand. Any change from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from a Senior Occupational Therapist, who is available daily.

Responsibilities

GLENALLEN ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES STATEMENT

• To work collaboratively within transdisciplinary teams to develop and implement student's individual program plans and complete the school's requirements for assessment and reporting.
• To provide occupational therapy services and consultancy.
• To attend meetings which include team meetings, staff meetings, departmental meetings, planning for Individual Education Plan and Student Support Groups as appropriate.
• To demonstrate an innovative approach to planning and implementing occupational therapy programs within the collaborative model.
• To provide appropriate intervention strategies, specialised aids and equipment to enable students to achieve optimal functioning.
• To establish effective communication to consult and advise other team members, families and caregivers regarding student management.
• To take a leading role in occupational therapy programs and actively implement programs incorporating safe lifting and transferring of students.
• To participate in mealtime assistance program.
• To contribute to school enrolment meetings
• To participate in personal and departmental appraisal.
• To liaise with and provide information to other agencies involved with the student.
• To identify and participate in professional development consistent with identified personal and professional development needs. This may involve participation in professional networks.
• To support and promote a positive and motivating environment in the therapy department.
• To use the students' augmentative and alternative communication systems

This position is part of a supportive and experienced occupational therapy team who work closely with other disciplines. It is for 3 days per week (Monday, Thursday, Friday) @ 7.6 hours during school terms. 8.30 am to 4.36 pm
