Role Description/Criteria

St Margaret Mary’s Primary School is seeking applications from experienced and passionate Learning Support Officers (LSOs) for full-time, fixed-term positions commencing in 2026. (some scope for FTE negotiations for successful applicant). These roles will support primary-aged students funded under the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) program.

Role Overview

The Learning Support Officer (LSO) supports students who need additional help so they can participate fully in the school’s classes, activities, and events - including excursions and camps.

This role is aimed at individuals who bring advanced skills and experience in classroom support, including the ability to:

  • Deliver and assist with the modification of learning activities under the direction of a teacher.
  • Timely, daily recording on student learning, progress and goals in collaboration with teachers.
  • Support curriculum delivery through targeted intervention, small-group work, and in-class support.

The successful applicants will play a key role in supporting the school’s Vision for Instruction and Vision for Engagement, ensuring that every student experiences equity and excellence in their learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work effectively with students who have physical, cognitive, sensory, and/or social-emotional disabilities or challenges
  • Assist students individually or in small groups in specific learning areas, guided by teachers and the Wellbeing/Learning Diversity team.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of learning activities under teacher direction, supporting curriculum implementation and classroom instruction.
  • Support the monitoring and recording of student progress, and communicate effectively with teachers and other staff.
  • Provide basic physical and emotional care for students, including supervision in class, during breaks, excursions, liturgies, and camps
  • Participate in team meetings, parent support group meetings (where directed), and school activities.
  • Support the collection, preparation, and distribution of teaching resources, and complete clerical or classroom-based tasks as required.
  • Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and a capacity to work collaboratively as part of a team or independently when needed.
  • Promote a child-safe environment and uphold the ethos of Catholic Education.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants may hold or be working towards:

  • Certificate IV in Education Support (or equivalent) an advantage.
  • At least two years’ experience supporting learning in the classroom an advantage.
  • Current Working With Children Check (WWCC).
  • Pre-service teachers currently enrolled in an education course are also highly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Work collaboratively to support teachers in planning, delivery, and assessment.
  • Promote positive behaviour and inclusion.
  • Support students with additional needs effectively.
  • Uphold confidentiality and maintain professional relationships with staff, students, and families.

Work Schedule:
8:30 am to 3:15 pm, full time or four – five days a week.
This position is Fixed term for the 2026 school year.
Requirements:
Applicants must hold a current Working With Children Check and a National Police Check.
