Derby District High School (DHS) is a dynamic, welcoming, and inclusive school with a highly motivated staff. The collaborative approach, exciting work environment and the students make it a great place to teach. Staff are passionate about improving standards in Education, particularly in Aboriginal Education.
The school is currently part of the Kimberley School’s Project (KSP) and seeks staff to enact a targeted teaching approach as part of their overall teaching and learning programs. This role will require you to mentor and support staff in the implementation of this initiative with a strong focus on evidence-based teaching strategies including Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI.)
Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and several river systems provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
Derby DHS is nestled in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings and is currently undergoing construction of new secondary classrooms. With an enrolment of over 620 students, it provides an education program for students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.

The Role
Derby DHS promotes the "Stronger Smarter Philosophy" of high teacher, student, and school expectations. School leaders are expected to lead this approach in all aspects of the school. The successful applicant will support Year 5 & 6 staff, as well as promoting positive high expectations relationships with students, staff, parents, and the wider community of Derby and surrounding Aboriginal communities. To be successful in this role you should be highly competent at establishing positive relationships across a wide range of contexts including students, staff, parents and engage parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school to enable all students to reach their potential.
The ability to mentor graduate teachers in delivering high quality teaching and learning strategies is desirable. In addition, experience working in an Aboriginal community and a passion for Aboriginal Education and improving the educational outcomes for these students is highly regarded. The successful applicant will ideally be committed to, and be able to exhibit, successful intervention approaches, particularly in the areas of literacy, numeracy and attendance across the primary school. You should have a passion for rural education as well as working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and their families to bring about positive, sustained change in student performance and achievement. Ensuring staff are provided with timely and appropriate feedback about their performance through classroom observations and performance growth (management) will also be a part of the role.
As the successful applicant, you will ideally be experienced in leading Behaviour Management in Schools (BMiS) and conducting restorative processes as well as be committed to collaborative teaching and learning practices to increase student attendance and engagement. You will also need to be an exceptional practitioner, ideally with a proven ability to bring about successful outcomes in all dealings, especially with students who may experience challenges external to the school setting.
The Deputy Principal will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Upper Primary School and develop processes and procedures to encourage effective communication and support the effective coordination of daily events and issues relating to duty of care. As the Deputy Principal you will lead curriculum and work with other members of the administration team to ensure teaching and learning programs cater for students of all levels of ability. You will assist the school to facilitate workforce effectiveness in leading and motivating staff in planning; directed at improving outcomes for students and the level of service delivered by the school especially in Explicit Direct Instruction. The Deputy Principal will play a significant role in the daily management of staff and student wellbeing as well as organising relief for teachers, timetabling students and following up on attendance.
