Position Information
The new Medowie High School will open to Year 7 students only at the start of Term 1, 2027. Located in Port Stephens on Worimi Country, the school serves a vibrant semi-rural community.
Recognising the unique opportunities and challenges of opening a new school, the successful applicant will be offered commencement in Term 3, 2026, prior to the completion of the site. During this period, the deputy principal will work closely with the principal to establish high-quality systems, structures and processes that support effective teaching and learning, student wellbeing, and school operations. The role includes contributing to strategic planning for the school’s establishment, supporting the development of a positive, inclusive and high-expectations school culture, and assisting in the implementation of systems to support the successful opening of the school.
A key component of the role in 2026 will be leading Year 6 to Year 7 transition processes, coordinating enrolment procedures, fostering strong partnerships with partner primary schools, families and the wider community, and supporting the successful commencement of the school’s inaugural cohort of students.
General Selection Criteria
- Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
- Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
- Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
- Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
- Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
- Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
Specific Selection Criteria
In addition to the general selection criteria,
- Demonstrated capacity to lead the establishment and management of effective school operations, systems and organisational processes, including strategic planning, resource management and the implementation of structures that support the successful opening and growth of a new school.
- Proven strong and strategic leadership skills, with the capacity to think critically, plan proactively and lead improvement through the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives that support high-quality teaching and learning.
- Demonstrated expertise in student behaviour support and wellbeing, with the capacity to lead the development and implementation of proactive, evidence-informed approaches that promote positive behaviour, student engagement, inclusion and a safe, supportive learning environment.
Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
