This is a 12 month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 1, 2026.

Applecross Senior High School's (SHS) goal is to encourage young people to achieve their potential through the value and enjoyment of learning. We aim to widen students' horizons by presenting a diverse, relevant and contemporary curriculum that will prepare them to thrive in an ever changing society. The curriculum reflects our desire for students to become responsible and flexible thinkers who will be well prepared for the challenges ahead. We offer an innovative curriculum with the provision of a range of study options for senior students, including a full tertiary entrance program and a wide variety of vocational courses.

The foundations for success lie in the careful development of inclusive and welcoming learning environments. By creating forums within these environments and giving students a voice, we become aware of their collective needs, ensuring that the necessary support can be delivered for strategic improvement.

The Role

Applecross Senior High School is seeking a passionate, dynamic, and creative Visual Art teacher to lead and support the state’s most prestigious Visual Arts Gifted and Talented (GAT) program.

The successful applicant will ideally be encouraged to promote student work across a range of forums, including external exhibitions, and to incorporate innovative technologies. A sound knowledge of contemporary art practices and current trends in the Arts is desirable, along with the ability to reflect on the direction of the program and adapt the curriculum as needed.

Experience in using student performance data and other evidence to review program outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement will be highly regarded. Supporting tutors through classroom visits and observation is a valued aspect of the role, as is the ability to foster a sense of community among students through organised learning activities and events held on Saturdays.

Strong interpersonal skills are highly regarded for liaising with staff from the Gifted and Talented Selection Unit (GTSU) and within the school, particularly during the annual student selection process. Familiarity with Department and school selection protocols is desirable.

The role also involves contributing to the selection and support of tutors for Saturday morning classes. The Teacher – Art will be timetabled to work on Saturdays, with corresponding release time during the school week.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

  • Providing educational leadership within the GAT program by supporting the school vision and contributing to the day-to-day operations of the curriculum and learning opportunities.
  • Supporting the pastoral care and wellbeing of participating students, and liaising with parents, Student Services, and the Department.
  • Collaborating with GTSU to assist with GAT Visual Arts testing, Academic Selective Entrance Testing, and student enrolment processes.
  • Assisting with the management of a cost centre, including GAT funding, student fees, and tutor-related expenditure.
  • Promoting the Applecross GAT Visual Arts program to students, parents, and the wider community.
  • Maintaining and developing partnerships with universities, community, and educational groups.
  • Liaising with the Parent Support Group.
  • Supporting the organisation of an annual major display of student works.
  • Collaborating with staff from other Visual Arts GAT schools to update materials and processes related to GAT testing.

The Teacher – Art will have a classroom teaching load of 0.4 FTE and will be supported by an Art Technician and clerical staff as determined by the Principal. The latter is determined by the Principal on a needs basis.
