The College:

The Western Cape College is a unique state school with two campuses located in Mapoon (P-6), and Weipa (P-12), as well as a secondary residential facility also located in Weipa. Each Campus is set in its own amazing cultural, social and geographical environment, spread over a vast area of the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland.

As the largest P-12 school in the Cape, we have an important role to play in supporting and continuing to lead innovative practices with Indigenous and Remote Education. The Position:

As Head of Special Education Services (HoSES), you will be an active member of the College Leadership team and will play a vital role in improving the educational outcomes of students, developing the quality of teaching and learning, and nurturing positive relationships between students, teachers, the community, and stakeholders.

The College structure and processes will ensure you have access to specialist support in respect to leadership, teaching and learning, as well as business activities, including, finance, facilities, and payroll.

Reporting to the Primary and Secondary Principals- you will have responsibility for the following:

  • Lead the College inclusion journey enacting the vision of every child succeeding through high quality inclusive education across K-12 at both the Mapoon and Weipa Campuses.
  • Build the capability of team members to deliver quality teaching practices across Weipa Primary, Secondary and Mapoon campuses for all students with disabilities.
  • Lead the collaboration of teaching teams to ensure students are engaged and improving in their learning.
  • Lead identified College-wide systems that ensure students are supported in accordance to relevant legislation and departmental policies – e.g. College NCCD system
  • Lead the coordination of and access of departmental support staff and external agencies to the College to maximise student and staff support across the College
  • Lead NDIS service providers implementing therapies at school processes.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and student wellbeing teams to facilitate levels of support for all students.
  • Form positive partnerships with parents, DoE and external service providers for the benefit of all students.
  • Lead professional learning for all staff in inclusive education
  • Enact the explicit improvement agenda of Western Cape College and State Schooling.
  • Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students with disability.
  • Manage the human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources of Inclusion to achieve goals.
