As the College continues to grow, we are seeking an exceptional and visionary music educator to lead our Music Performance program and provide strategic direction for our Co-curricular Music initiatives across the College. Position Summary

The Head of Music Performance provides strategic and creative leadership for the College’s comprehensive music ensembles, spanning both Junior and Senior Schools. In collaboration with the Head of Performing Arts, this role is responsible for shaping and delivering an engaging vision for music education and performance, including the development of vibrant band and orchestral programmes, ensembles and co-curricular initiatives. The successful candidate will inspire and mentor students across all year levels, collaborate with a talented team of educators, and foster a culture of artistic excellence that enriches the life of the College community.

Reports to: Head of Performing Arts

Status and Hours: Full Time, Permanent position

Student supervision hours are 8 am – 3.30 pm, although an understanding is required that the role will require greater hours than this, including attendance at weekly staff meetings and other after hour events.

Full Time Equivalent (FTE): 1.0

Major Responsibilities

The Head of Music Performance responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive music performance program that aligns with the college’s educational goals and values, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging musical education for students.
  • Provide artistic direction and vision for all music performance activities, including concerts, recitals, and ensemble performances.
  • Teach classroom music across Stages 2–6, delivering engaging, outcomes-focussed lessons that align with NESA syllabus requirements and incorporate contemporary pedagogical approaches.
  • Recruit, supervise and support a team of skilled music tutors. Foster a collaborative and professional environment among performance instructors.
  • Mentor and guide students in their musical journey, fostering their growth as performers and musicians. Encourage participation in tuition and ensembles, festivals, and extracurricular activities related to music.
  • Direct and coordinate / conduct various music ensembles, ensuring high-quality performances and promoting a sense of camaraderie among students.
  • Manage daily operations of all musical ensembles across Junior and Senior schools.
  • Manage daily operations of all musical tuition across Junior and Senior schools.
  • Manage daily operations of all instrument hiring across Junior and Senior schools.
  • Regularly attend ensemble rehearsals as either a musician or observer (depending on allocations).
  • Manage music rehearsals, set up, and performances for assemblies, formal events, chapels and creative arts shows including overseeing sound and AV.
  • Manage tutor invoices and purchase of non-curriculum instruments and equipment.
  • Manage all ensemble / tuition communications between the college, students and tutors, including Clipboard rolls.
  • Under the leadership of the Head of Performing Arts steward the music performance budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for instruments, equipment, and materials.
  • Engage with the broader community through performances, workshops, and partnerships with local arts organisations including the coordination of ensemble excursions / camps / tours.
  • Stay current with music education trends and pedagogical methods.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to promote the College’s values: courage, curiosity, craftsmanship, collaboration and compassion.

Professional and Personal Attributes

The Head of Music Performance must have the vision and skills to grow and achieve excellence in the music performance opportunities at the College. Essential criteria for this role include;

  • A committed Christian and active member of a church community.
  • Experienced secondary educator with NESA accreditation and a proven ability to deliver engaging, outcomes-focussed programs, using contemporary pedagogical approaches such as explicit instruction, inquiry-based learning, and the development of critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated excellence in music performance and ensemble direction, which may include band, string, and or choir conducting.
  • Dynamic and inspiring approach to engage students from Junior to Senior School.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, with strong written and verbal communication, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive and professional relationships across the College community.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and actively contribute to the co-curricular life of the College.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning and reflective practice.

Additional Information

References: Provide three (3) referees one of whom should be the Minister of the Christian community you serve within, who can support your application.

Salary: In accordance with the Independent Schools (Teachers) Cooperative Multi-Enterprise Agreement 2025 or future approved agreement.
