Education Assistant - Special Needs

We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise throughout Term 4, 2025 and during the 2026 school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Our school is located in the growing suburb of Southern River, surrounded by rapidly developing housing estates. In 2023, Yarralinka Primary School opened its Stage 2 buildings, which expanded the school to cater for students up to Year 6. Our school community includes families of diverse backgrounds and cultures, many from overseas, where English is not the first language or dialect spoken at home.

The Role

We are seeking Education Assistants who are passionate about supporting students and committed to maximising their impact on learning. Suitable applicants will ideally have high expectations and believe that all children can learn and be successful in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. As a valued staff member at our school, having the ability to embrace evidence-based strategies implemented across the school to meet student needs is desired. Experience in synthetic phonics, MultiLit/MiniLit, Spelling Mastery, supporting students with learning needs or disabilities, and social and emotional learning will be highly regarded.

We seek enthusiastic team members who should show initiative in adapting tasks to meet student needs and contribute advice and expertise while collaborating with staff to support student achievement. Under teacher direction, you will assist in the implementation of education programs and support students in out-of-class activities, during breaks in the school day and on school excursions. You should also assist with the supervision, general health and wellbeing of students, including attending to minor illnesses and/or injuries. Suitable applicants will ideally demonstrate good organisational skills, actively engage in self-reflection and provide feedback on student progress to teachers.

Having a ‘can-do’ attitude and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change, showing initiative, flexibility and creative problem solving to create the best opportunities for students, acknowledging the academic, social, emotional and physical dimensions is desired.

    • Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
    • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
    • Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
