Diverse Learning Teacher (Small Class)
Purpose of the Role
The Diverse Learning Teacher (Small Class) is accountable to the Learning Support Leader to provide a focus on meeting the diverse needs of students with intellectual impairment and multiple disabilities, including challenging behaviours, complex communication needs, and trauma backgrounds.
The Diverse Learning Teacher achieves this through effective programs, strategies, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, playing a pivotal role within the Junior/Secondary School by coordinating various opportunities for students to reach their full potential.
The role may also incorporate other subject teaching depending on the school’s needs each year and the teacher’s areas of expertise.
Additional Reporting Relationships
The Diverse Learning Teacher may also report to the Junior School/Secondary Pastoral Care Leader and Deputy Principal.

Summary of Work Responsibilities
1. Meeting the Diverse Needs of Students
Provide a focus for meeting the diverse needs of students and assisting them to reach their full potential by:
- Developing and conducting programs and strategies.
- Implementing positive behaviour support strategies for students with intellectual impairments, ASD, and other disabilities.
- Implementing augmentative and alternative communication systems for non-verbal students.
- Developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs), and other relevant documentation for students with intellectual impairments and disabilities.
- Analysing student information, assessments, and reports.
- Collaborating with parents/caregivers, subject teachers, Year Level Coordinators, Learning Support Leaders, specialists, and agencies to develop strategies that help students flourish.
- Monitoring student progress through reports and communication tools.
- Attending staff meetings and relevant school events.
- Preparing for and participating in Parent/Caregiver–Teacher interviews.
2. Contributing to the Christian Life of the School
- Participate in morning devotions.
- Pray for students and their growth in faith and learning.
3. Contributing to a Safe and Healthy Workplace
- Follow Work Health and Safety (WHS) instructions and policies.
- Report accidents and hazards promptly.
- Care for one’s own safety and that of others, including volunteers, students, and parents, who may be affected by one’s actions or inactions.
- Actively participate in rehabilitation and return-to-work programs.
4. Professional Development
- Attend professional development and training required by the school.
- Actively seek opportunities to increase knowledge, experience, and skills.
5. School Involvement
- Become involved in the life of the school, including co-curricular activities and participation in school events.
Essential Criteria
General Requirements
- Have a sincere faith in Jesus Christ and active involvement in a local church community.
- Have a passion for Christian education and for integrating a Christian biblical worldview into curriculum, pedagogy, and professional relationships with students and the wider school community.

Demonstrated ability to:
- Provide a focus for meeting the diverse needs of students and assist them to reach their full potential.
- Manage behaviour effectively, analyse student information, and prepare assessments and reports.
- Implement communication systems for non-verbal students.
Experience
- Behaviour management and student assessment analysis.
- Implementing communication systems for non-verbal students.
- Applying positive behaviour support strategies for students with intellectual impairments, ASD, and other disabilities.
Knowledge
Demonstrated understanding and ability to:
- Differentiate the Australian Curriculum and develop approaches that support the Christian ethos of the school.
- Program units of work to support curriculum objectives, adjustments, and lesson preparation.
- Motivate and stimulate student interest in the subjects taught.
- Set and assess student work.
- Prepare written reports on student progress and achievement.
- Set and maintain appropriate behaviour and discipline procedures in harmony with school policy.
