Established in 1977, Highvale Secondary College is a 7-12 co-educational single school campus located in Glen Waverley within the City of Monash. Our College has approximately 1200 students enrolled, including 50 International Students from several different countries. The College is a registered provider of the International Student program. Our student body is divided into the Junior School Years 7-9 and Senior School Years 10-12. The schools SFOE index is 0.1905 which is classed as low. The school has 110.41 equivalent full-time staff: 3 Principal class, 83.8 teaching staff and 23.61 education support staff.
In 2019, the school completed a major refurbishment creating modern teaching spaces, including specialist spaces for all learning domains, a purpose-built Theatre, a well-resourced Library, Robotics and 3D printing room, Careers Centre and Wellbeing Centre providing a welcoming and safe space. Our Senior Study Centre provides a collaborative study space and is supervised to ensure students maximise this area. Students can access numerous recreational spaces, including our gymnasium and hardcourt surface basketball courts, large oval and outdoor table tennis tables. The College has established gardens and large shaded spaces that provide tranquil areas for students to relax and catch up with friends during recess and lunchtimes.
Highvale Secondary College has a culture which aims to empower students to be active, motivated, and independent learners, working co-operatively and individually to prepare them for a digital and changing society. Our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework aims to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment, and student voice is encouraged throughout the entire school. Our Learning and Teaching programs are designed to cater for the learning needs of all students through differentiation to ensure that they are challenged. We have a vertically structured curriculum that offers a broad range of subjects as students make choices based on ability and interest. We actively promote academic excellence with an emphasis on acceleration, enrichment, student leadership and promotion of positive self-esteem. There is opportunity to accelerate into Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies at year 10, as well as Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) options.
Our highly recognised Instrumental Music Program enables students to develop skills and expertise, providing a valuable co-curricular experience. Students can learn and play a variety of instruments, including strings, brass woodwind, percussion, and voice. Our students have the opportunity of performing in several bands and ensembles within our school and throughout the wider community to further connect with our school and perform in front of authentic audiences. The college also offers a range of other opportunities for students including, sporting opportunities, clubs, school camps at Years 7, 11 and 12, and international experiences.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Assistant Principal - Pedagogy, Assessment and Collaboration plays a key role in the implementation of the College's newly formed Strategic Plan. This role has a focus on leading the improvement of assessment practices, inclusion and collaborative practices across the college.
In this regard they:
- Reflect and nurture the vision, values and philosophy of the college.
- Provide strategic leadership and management
- Assist in the development and implementation of college strategic planning and reporting (School Strategic Plan, Annual Implementation Plan and Annual Report to the Community) and policy development.
- Identify needs, initiate change and facilitate innovation in areas pertaining to student learning and wellbeing, curriculum and assessment.
- Assist in building leadership capability and high performing teams across the college.
- Promote and oversee programs and initiatives that support inclusive practices and culture across our college programs and community.
- Use consultative and collaborative approaches to provide opportunities for staff, students and parent/carer/guardian contribution to the growth of the college as a learning community
- Maintain a high standard of professional competence and current knowledge in DE policy and initiatives and broader educational trends.
- Assist the Principal where required.
Role
The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.
Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.
The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.
Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.
Responsibilities
Lead the enhancement of assessment practices across the whole school
- Oversee the development and implementation of a consistent assessment model that links to the school's instructional model
- In collaboration with the AP - Improvement Innovation and Change, lead the teaching and learning team to improve curriculum, assessment and teacher practice.
Lead student inclusion programs.
- Oversee the effective delivery of the Disability Inclusion reform with the Leading Teacher - Disability Inclusion.
- In partnership with the AP - Culture and Community, ensure the consistent implementation of IEPs to ensure the learning and wellbeing growth of every student is met.
- Provide leadership in the development of programs and practice to provide a safe and inclusive learning community for diverse cohorts of students.
Staff Professional Learning
- Oversee the continuous review and implementation of the College's professional learning framework including PLCs
- Work closely with the Leadership Team to create accountability and feedback processes that ensure teachers are supported to implement effective teaching and assessment practices with consistency.
- Oversee the mentoring of new staff
- In collaboration with the Leading Teacher - Professional Learning Communities facilitate the induction process for new teachers
- Oversee the Performance and Development Process (PDP)
Strategic Resource Management
- Oversee the development of budgets and the allocation and expenditure of resources for all program areas within the portfolio. Build the financial management skills of program leaders.
- Support the Principal in the development of the college workforce plan.
- Play a key role in the recruitment and induction of new staff.
- Lead the development of a workplace culture that supports staff to flourish and excel in their work.
Strategic Planning and Evaluation
- Lead the actions of the Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) and the achievement of student and college outcomes as defined in the School Strategic Plan.
- Use the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO) and use the FISO Improvement Cycle to evaluate and diagnose, set goals and outcomes, develop and plan and monitor and implement.
- Participate and contribute to initiatives that support student learning across network/system schools.
Responsibilities
Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:
- supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators;
- allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility;
- supervision of the delivery of teaching programs;
- management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff;
- responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators;
- contribute to the overall management of the school;
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
