The Languages learning area provides all students with the opportunity to engage in learning a language in addition to English. It develops students' linguistic competence and intercultural capability alongside understanding themselves as communicators. The scope includes language-specific curricula for modern languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Modern Greek, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese, as well as Auslan, frameworks for Aboriginal Languages and Torres Strait Islander Languages, and Classical Languages. Students learn to communicate in the target language, understand language systems and the interrelationship of language and culture, fostering respect for diversity and opportunities in a globalised world.
